Success Rate of the IVF Procedure

Success Rate of the IVF Procedure

IVF procedure is used to treat infertility in couples when all other assisted reproductive technology failed to provide the results. IVF depends on a many factors and hence the success rate of IVF also varies. The outcome of IVF procedure is different for different women. Learn more about the factors affecting IVF and the success rate here.

When an individual patient or a couple chooses the IVF procedure the average statistics may not be contextually applicable. There are a host of factors that determine the outcome of the IVF procedure and thus ascertain its success rate.

Factors Affecting IVF Success Rate

  • The age of the woman - This gives a clear picture of her ovarian reserve.
  • The status of the uterus – whether it is absolutely normal, the quality of the semen must also be cultured.
  • The success or failure rate of the fertilisation and cleavage in the vitro procedure.
  • The total number, the maturity level and the quality of eggs that are retrieved play a vital role too.
  • The total number of embryos that have been transferred and cyro-preserved
  • Whether the luteal phase post transfer is adequate or not
  • The actually cause of infertility is also a major factor that determines the success rate of the IVF

It is also important to note here, the success rate of the IVF increases with the increase of the IVF stimulation attempts. It usually ranges for a maximum of 3-4 stimulation cycles.

The Other Relevant Factors

The success rate also depends on how well the physician or the clinic supports a couple wanting to undergo the IVF procedure. It has been found that when the patients are not preselected, there are maximum chances of the women attaining their dream to become mothers. Female patients who are low responders and those who have a failed IVF cycle in the past should not act as deterrents. But pregnancies are found to happen in many of these ‘negative’ cases as well.

The success rate can be improved when a female who is older than forty-three years, or has an FSH level that is higher than 15 mIU /ml on a basal cycle day – 3, can be asked to opt for egg donations. This increases the chances of conception a lot.

With the rise in the number of IVF stimulation attempts, the success rate also increases simultaneously. The most recent results for the IVF and the donor egg cycles are taken into account along with the cyro-cycle pregnancy rates and the combined pregnancy rate for the current decade. All these factors determine the potential reproductive success rate.

How is IVF Success Rate Increased?

Females with a good prognosis, that is who are less than 38 years of age have a positive chance of thawed embryo transfer or cyro-preservation. They generally have a normal ovarian reserve that is determined through serum day – 3 FSH level and they also have undergone stimulation through the luteal or the Lupron protocol. It has been observed that those who receive donor eggs and have a great prognosis contribute in higher success rates.

The options to enhance the odds of pregnancy are to freeze the extra pre-embryos or to go for repeated attempts. Patients, who are able to produce a fair amount of healthy embryos, can actually have a pregnancy option at their disposal at a comparatively much lower cost, thus resulting in cost efficiency.

The other important factor comprises of the reproductive potential success rates. This is basically the number of pregnancies resulting from a single stimulated cycle. This ought to follow from a fresh embryo transfer cycle along with an additional cycle of the transfer of the cryo-preserved embryo that is obtained from the same stimulation. Apart from being cost effective, this enhances the chances of pregnancy by over 60%.
