What Is Your Discipline Style?

What Is Your Discipline Style?
Identifying discipline style is essential to adopt right mix of disciplining strategies. It can help parents to develop good behaviour and manners in kids. Have a quick look at the different discipline styles and know about their effects of kids.

One of the most difficult phases of parenthood involves disciplining kids. Discipline is a controversial topic amongst many parents as there are positive as well as negative connotations to this subject. However, there is no denying the fact that discipline is absolutely and centrally important to the proper upbringing of kids. Here are some points that will let you identify your discipline style.

Authoritarian Discipline

This is an indicator of old school parenting where the parent fixes the rules and it is established that kids will follow those rules at all times without exception. Children have little or no involvement in helping frame strategies or making decisions. Any question about the validity or necessity of decisions or disciplinary measures on part of kids is usually answered by “because I told you so” by parents.
There are scarce explanations given to kids and very few opportunities for negotiation. In many cases parents who believe in authoritarian discipline style use punishments directly instead of stating consequences. If you find yourself confirming to the above mentioned patterns then your discipline style is authoritarian, though you might make kids follow rules and discipline, your children may grow up with some confidence issues.

Permissive Discipline

Parents who follow the permissive model are usually the exact opposite of authoritarian parents. These parents are soft with children in general and only intervene if they feel that a serious problem has cropped up. The general attitude is “children will be children” and parents demonstrating permissive discipline style don the cap of a friend.
If you find yourself trying to talk and treat your child always as an equal then it is a sign of permissive discipline. Your children will feel free in sharing their problems with you but they may be prone to crossing boundaries too. Kids of permissive parents also tend to lag behind academically and show unwillingness to adjust to rules.

Uninvolved Discipline

A parent who does not interfere in most aspects of kid’s life can be said to be an uninvolved parent. Such parents often use discipline randomly without exhibiting a fixed pattern. For example they may not be aware of a child school performance in general but when the same kid fails in final exams the uninvolved parent suddenly withdraws benefits as a form of discipline.
This is one of the worst forms of discipline according to psychiatrists. Children of such parents suffer from poor self esteem and behavioural problems apart from having low trust in the parent-child relationship.

Authoritative Discipline

Authoritative discipline is a blend of love and restraint and this is the most preferred discipline style according to child psychiatrists. Authoritative parents set boundaries for their kids but allow children to participate in decisions within those boundaries. Such parents also offer logic, explanation and options to their kids apart from making a genuine effort to make children understand the reasons behind decisions.
Authoritative parents always state conditions and consequences if rules are broken. Once rules are broken by kids, authoritative parents do not hesitate in implementing those decisions.

Striking the Perfect Balance

Choosing a discipline style is not easy as it depends on your cultural context, personal nature, expectations of society and the orientation of your kids. However, as a parent you must always be aware of the need of making your kid benefit from the warmth of your love as well as the structure of your discipline. It is okay to mix and match two or more discipline styles and find a perfect solution for your kids.
Disciplining kids is not only about punishing them. Therefore, for the well being of kids is necessary to understand the overall circumstances and the outcomes, advantages and disadvantages while following any a particular discipline style or a combination of such styles. With some practice and a little effort you will surely be able to implement the best discipline style for your kids.

Which are the best strategies for disciplining kids? How to avoid being too soft or too strict with kids? What are the ways to identify right mix of discipline styles for right development of kids? Discuss here.
